Globular bowl with abstract polychrome design by Steve Lucas. This is an extraordinarily thin-walled pot with complex, careful designs. Steve is widely considered one on the best young potters at Hopi, but the perfection of this piece diminishes its power for me. Like many of the best modern pieces, the painting is so perfect that it almost looks like a decal to me. I am very impressed by the enormous skill involved in making this pot, but upon reflection, I am left somewhat cold by the overall aesthetic effect. In December 2004, the (undisciplined) son of a friend broke this pot.
